Exploring Solar Cells Technologies: N-Type vs. P-Type

Solar panels are created by many solar cells. Solar cells are also called photovoltaic cells. They convert light energy into electricity. These cells were first invented in 1954, it was an n-type design. When the efficiency continued to increase, the development of the p-type solar cell began taking over.

Initially, solar technology was used on space-related equipment. While used for space applications, found that p-type solar cells have better resistance to radiation and degradation. So, it became the more popular design. Both cells are having their own advantages and features.

In this article let us discuss the main key differences between the P-Type and the N-Type Solar Cells.

P-Type Solar Cells

1. These cells dopes the silicon base with Boron and the top is doped with Phosphorus.

2. It is a positively charged solar cell because boron has one less electron than silicon.

3. These cells are the most commonly technology used.

4. The efficiency of the P-Type cells is lower than the N-Type.

5. These cells are affected by LID/LeTID ((Light Induced Degradation) or LeTID (Light and elevated Temperature Induced Degradation)

6. It is easier to lower the lifetime of cells.

7. The P-Type solar cells are less expensive than the N-Type solar cells.

N-Type Solar Cells

1. These cells dopes the silicon base with Phosphorus and doped with boron on the top.

2. Phosphorus has one more electron than silicon so it makes the cell overall negatively charged.

3. These cells are the future trending technology.

4. The efficiency of N-Type cells is higher when compared to P-Type cells.

5. These solar cells are not affected by LID/LeTID ((Light Induced Degradation) or LeTID (Light and elevated Temperature Induced Degradation)

6. It tolerates high temperature and It has optimized temperature coefficients to around –0.30%/°C.

7. The cost of the N-Type solar cells is higher.

When choosing a solar cell, the product’s longevity and demand in the future play a crucial role and the future appears to belong to N-type solar panels. It’s very important to consider all factors when determining which type is the ‘best’ solar panel. When comes down to budget concerns. N-type solar panels are more efficient, longer-lasting, and generally a higher quality option.
